Tencent Video Launches ‘Pet TV’: A 24/7 Streaming Service Tailored for China’s Furry Companions

Tencent Video has officially entered the thriving "pet economy" with the launch of Pet TV, a dedicated streaming package offering 24/7 content specifically designed for dogs, cats, and other household pets. This innovative service caters to pet owners who want to provide entertainment and comfort for their animals while they are away from home.

Capitalizing on a Multi-Billion Yuan Market

The decision to launch Pet TV is backed by compelling market data. Statistics indicate that pet owners in China are willing to spend between 2,000 and 3,000 RMB annually on pet care and well-being. The overall pet market in China is projected to exceed a staggering 450 billion RMB.

Tencent’s internal research also discovered that 66% of pet owners leave their televisions on for their pets when they head out. Pet TV aims to fill this gap by providing high-quality, scientifically-backed content rather than standard human programming.

Scientifically Optimized for Animal Senses

Understanding that dogs and cats perceive the world differently than humans, Tencent has engineered Pet TV content with specific technical adjustments:

  • Audio Frequency: Soundscapes are tuned to frequencies that are calming or stimulating for animals.

  • Color Grading: Visuals are adjusted to match the limited color spectrum of dogs and cats (dichromatic vision).

  • High Frame Rates: Content is rendered at higher frame rates to eliminate the "flicker" effect that animals often see on standard TV screens.

The service offers both original Tencent productions and curated international programs, categorized by breed and desired mood. Pet TV is now officially available to subscribers across China.

A major problem for pets in urban societies is "separation anxiety." Pet TV isn't just for entertainment; it uses psychologically-calming blue tones and music that mimics a mother's heartbeat to help reduce stress in pets while their owners are at work.

It's anticipated that Tencent will use AI to analyze pet behavior through home security cameras (Smart Home Integration). If the AI detects a dog barking or becoming anxious, the system will automatically instruct Pet TV to switch to a "Deep Calm" mode to soothe pets in real-time.

Besides working adults, an increasing number of elderly people in China who live alone (Empty Nesters) are adopting pets to combat loneliness. This service represents an expansion of the customer base to families and seniors who want to provide the best for their four-legged "family members."

In the future, Pet TV may become an interactive shopping channel, allowing owners to order treats or toys seen on the show directly through the Tencent Video app, creating a comprehensive pet shopping ecosystem.
