Phil Schiller Steps Down from App Store and Events Leadership in Post-Tim Cook Reorganization.
Phil Schiller Steps Down from App Store and Apple Events Roles Following Executive Restructuring

Following the formal conclusion of Tim Cook’s tenure as CEO, Apple has initiated a broader executive reorganization. As anticipated, veteran executive Phil Schiller has officially announced his departure from the two primary operational roles he retained after transitioning from Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing in 2020: overseeing the App Store and managing Apple’s product launch events.

Schiller will remain with the company exclusively as an Apple Fellow, an honorary advisory title.

A Legacy Spanning the Steve Jobs Era

Schiller stands among Apple’s longest-serving executives, having rejoined the company in 1997 alongside Steve Jobs during Apple’s iconic turnaround. As the long-time head of worldwide marketing, he became one of the most recognizable faces of the brand, co-presenting major product keynotes including the original iPod, iPhone, and iPad unveilings and shaping Apple’s global brand identity for over two decades.

Restructuring Operational Leadership

With Schiller stepping back, Apple is reassigning his key responsibilities across senior leadership:

  • App Store Oversight: Governance of the App Store returns under the umbrella of Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President of Services. Day-to-day management will be led by Carson Oliver.

  • Product Launch Events: Corporate events and launch keynotes will now be spearheaded by Nola Weinstein, who previously worked alongside Schiller on event production. This unit will report directly to Kristin Huguet Quayle, Vice President of Worldwide Corporate Communications.

Under Schiller's leadership, the App Store was seen as a separate ecosystem balancing developer relationships and marketplace management. Directly integrating the App Store under Eddy Cue would align the marketplace with Apple's massive $80 billion services portfolio (including Apple Music, iCloud, and Apple TV+), optimizing revenue generation as Apple faces ongoing global regulatory scrutiny over third-party app stores.

Phil Schiller was a master of unadulterated, live stage presentations alongside Steve Jobs. However, since the pandemic, Apple's product launches have shifted to meticulously pre-recorded, cinematic presentations. The delegation of event management to Nola Weinstein and corporate communications reflects the evolution of Apple's press conferences from live developer presentations to highly regulated, global marketing broadcasts.

Schiller's withdrawal from operational duties marks a complete generational shift from the executive team that helped Steve Jobs rescue Apple from bankruptcy in 1997. As a new CEO and leadership team take over, Apple is undergoing a structural transition to leaders who have risen from positions built during the growth of the iPhone and its services.
