NVIDIA Launching DLSS 5 on September 3, Debuting in NBA 2K27 for GeForce RTX 50 Series and GeForce NOW

NVIDIA has officially announced that DLSS 5 its next-generation Deep Learning Super Sampling technology introduced earlier this year will begin rolling out globally on September 3. The groundbreaking AI rendering technology will make its commercial debut in 2K Games' NBA 2K27, supporting players running GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs as well as subscribers streaming via GeForce NOW.

Granular Developer Control and Per-Object AI Models

Unlike blunt upscaling algorithms, DLSS 5 introduces advanced AI Neural Rendering designed to enhance visual fidelity while preserving developer intent. NVIDIA confirmed that the technology integrates directly with a game's existing 3D pipeline while granting developers unprecedented control:

  • Per-Scene Optimization: Game studios can assign specific AI neural models tailored to distinct environmental conditions or lighting setups within individual scenes.

  • Per-Object Targeting: Developers can isolate specific in-game objects or characters, applying targeted AI rendering passes without altering the global visual balance.

Driver Activation and Sky-High Performance Benchmarks

To enable DLSS 5, players must update to the new GeForce Game Ready Driver releasing on September 3 and toggle on the DLSS Neural Rendering option within the in-game display settings.

NVIDIA shared staggering internal performance benchmarks when pairing DLSS 5 with its flagship GeForce RTX 5090 GPU under full feature enablement:

  • 4K Resolution: Achieves up to 370 FPS

  • 1440p Resolution: Reaches an incredible 590 FPS

The key difference between DLSS 5 and its predecessors, earlier versions of DLSS enhanced visualization (DLSS 3/3.5), focused primarily on spatial and time-sensitive frame rates. DLSS 5 evolves towards full neural network rendering, utilizing deep learning to construct lighting physics, reflections, and subtle geometric details on existing 3D structures, resulting in realistic visuals without traditional rendering.

A major concern among game developers regarding automatic AI filtering was the loss of control over art style and lighting design. By allowing studios to assign different neural network models to specific scenes or individual 3D models, NVIDIA ensures artists have the ability to fine-tune the placement and application of AI interpolation, preventing unwanted graphical distortion in high-speed esports games like NBA 2K27.

Day-one support for DLSS 5 on GeForce NOW allows non-RTX 50 Series users to experience high-frame-rate neural network-rendered games without purchasing expensive flagship hardware. This cloud-based parity lowers the barrier to accessing next-generation graphics while expanding the player base for games utilizing NVIDIA's latest visualization technology.
